Styling Nautical Stubbs & Wootton

One thing I miss about living in the Northeast is the gravitation towards nautical culture. A favorite escape, that I’ve been thinking about often recently, was our long weekend in Newport, Rhode Island. This is a sailor’s paradise and is a prime example of nautical life. Growing up in Florida, I was raised on the water and am no stranger to being on a boat. Back in the day, my dad was an avid sailor and still wears an anchor chain to this day. All of that together has given me a natural affinity for those nautical motifs that I love so much. If it has an anchor on it, chances are I’ll want it in my closet.
After years of coveting and lusting, I finally committed to a pair of Stubbs & Wootton slippers. Thinking about the color scheme I have in the rest of my closet, picking a navy and white pair was a no-brainer! The white embroidered anchor pattern is subtle and adds a fun punch to a neutral shoe. I’ve been finding myself wearing them with almost everything! Seriously, shorts, jeans, dresses, nothing is off limits. I find that they are a great substitute for when a ballet flat or sneaker just won’t due.
Stubbs & Wootton is a preppy staple and became an instant classic when it was launched in 1993. Some of their most popular styles and designs are tongue-in-cheek motifs that may not be suitable for everyone. Exhibit A. Depending on where you live, you may be drawn to either a velvet or linen pair. Either way, you known you’re getting a high-quality piece that could last you a lifetime with the proper upkeep. For something truly special, consider creating your own style with their Bespoke collection.
When thinking of the perfect outfit for these loafers, I wanted to lean on the nautical influences for a perfectly classic outfit. A crisp pair of white jeans is a good place to start, especially if they’re slightly cropped to show off the shoe. My favorite for the past few years has been this pair from J. Crew. The white is bright and the high-waisted style is incredibly flattering.
My favorite part of this outfit is this cozy sweater from Talbots. I’ve owned and loved many fisherman sweaters in my day, but this color is a first for me! The camel with navy stitching makes it perfect to wear with both denim and white jeans. I even love the idea of pairing it with a white eyelet midi skirt in the early spring months. Wearing it, even while exploring the St. Pete Marina, gave me the feel of being in New England. Again, Newport, I miss you!
Sometimes it’s fun to dress for the city you wish you were in. Since I’m currently daydreaming of nautical days on the New England coast, that means navy, sweaters, and lots of anchors! Having a pair of Stubbs & Wootton Loafers doesn’t hurt either! If you love the shoes, but aren’t in love with the price tag, I highly recommend shopping them second hand at The Real Real. Even though you never know what you’ll find, you can purchase at a fraction of the price. Happy shopping!
Love from Florida,
Katie
