Revisiting THE Dress of 2019

Since working from home, I’ve been all about wearing and rewearing my midi or maxi dresses. The number one item in my rotation is this boho inspired dress that I’ve had for nearly a year. Nicknamed the ‘Amazon nightgown’, it was all the rage last summer and why wouldn’t it be? It comes in about 40 different colors and is under $35. Funny enough, I was even interviewed by the New York Post about the the huge trend. It definitely felt like I officially had made it as a New Yorker with that phone call.
One of the questions that the interviewer asked has always stuck with me. “Are you still going to wear this dress beyond the trend?” I gave a quick yes, but there was no way to be sure. I absolutely loved them, but they weren’t always seasonally appropriate in the Big Apple. At the time, I didn’t know a move back to Florida was on the immediate horizon. Since moving back, I’ve worn the dress much more often and have even added a few more colors to my closet. The breezy style has been great for hot Florida days. Just like when it first hit the scene, I’m still bombarded with compliments each time I wear it.
Cut to the Spring of 2020, when life threw us all a major curve ball. All of a sudden, the notion of spending the entire day in your pajamas and going out in public in them doesn’t seem so odd. I have no way of knowing for sure, but I imagine that the popularity of said ‘nightgown’ has skyrocketed. I’ve even seen a new term, the housedress, being thrown around. Whatever name you decide to use, now is a great time to get comfortable and wear what continues to be a closet favorite.
Many different brands and designers are starting to come out with their version of the house dress. They come in a whole range of colors, styles, and price points. Even though it seems there’s a pretty standard way of wearing it, I’m always experimenting and styling mine in different ways. I’ve dressed it up with nude heels and down with a simple pair of sandals. Sometimes it’s best to wear with no footwear at all! As for me, I prefer to wear with espadrille wedges. It just really caps off the whole boho-inspired feel.
Sometimes, what starts out as a trend ends up becoming a classic in its own way. We had no idea that 2020 would be the rise of working from home, but I’m so happy to have a few choice pieces on hand to stay both comfortable and chic. If it’s something you want to try for yourself, take a look below to shop your options.
Love from Florida,
