Redefining My Personal Style

Have you ever heard about the theory that your taste buds change every seven years? Where I don’t think there’s a lot of science behind that, I wonder if the same can be said about personal style? Orange to Apple has been around for just over four years, and you can easily see how my personal style has evolved during that time. I think where you live and where you travel greatly influence what you wear. Living in Manhattan for two years and the many subsequent visits have greatly left their mark. Between NYC, Paris, and wherever else 2022 takes me, I’ve decided to take a moment for redefining my personal style.
Loving the Coastal Grandmother Aesthetic
Typically, trends, especially of the TikTok variety, mean nothing to me. The current Coastal Grandmother aesthetic sweeping the seaside has made its way directly to my heart. The linens, the natural colors, and the oversized silhouettes have systematically begun to take over my wardrobe. You can see my first thought about Coastal Grandmother in this previous blog post, but my love has only grown since then. The only thing I’m missing is a trip to the Hamptons and a crate of rosĂ©.
Opting for Timeless Pieces
I think this should go without saying, but even I’m guilty of purchasing pieces on a whim. While ‘timeless’ can mean something different, depending on your perspective, I’m thinking mainly about silhouettes, colors, and patterns. Recently, I’ve tried to be mindful about what makes its way into my closet, and I think I’ve been pretty successful! Since working from home, I’ve noticed that I have the same handful of outfits on repeat Monday through Friday. When I love something, I will wear it until the bitter end.
Picking My Colors Carefully
Picking colors carefully doesn’t mean I’m only wearing black or white from here on out. Instead, it reminds me to think about what colors actually belong in my closet. Black and white are classic. I’m partial to any shade of blue and love having an excuse to wear canary yellow or bright red. Even pink is a very welcome sight during the spring months. Deep purple and some shades of green just aren’t right against my olive skin tone. Color help tells a story and evokes certain feelings. This applies to the real world and the confines of any blogger’s Instagram post. What are your most worn colors telling you?
Comfort Above All Else
If you ever see me wearing a skin-tight body con dress, please send help! For as long as I can remember, I’ve always preferred my clothes to be oversized and in natural fabrics. I’m even known to buy a larger size to give it a little bit of a boho feel. This will most likely be my MO until the end of time. Remember, size is just a number, and buying what feels most comfortable to you is most important.
Thanks for bearing with me during this stream of consciousness. I think change is a good thing, and that’s especially true in your closet. If you haven’t done so recently, take a moment to list what’s important to you in terms of clothes and fashion. Clean out your closet, make room for growth, and have fun while you’re doing it. After all, redefining your personal style isn’t supposed to be a chore. Just let what you choose to wear naturally speak for who you are.
Love from NYC,
