On Leaving the Classroom

Normally, during this time of year, I am talking all about teacher jitters and back to school style. You may have noticed that I’ve been a little quiet on that front. Here’s the thing… Over the summer, I made the extremely personal decision to take a step away from the classroom. I will always be a teacher, I love working with students, parents, and open-minded co-workers. However, a voice inside was telling me that I needed a change. It’s not something that I did lightly, but I’m so excited for what the future is going to hold.
I’ve been blogging for around five years now. Trust me, this career shift has nothing to do with focusing on my blog full-time. I am happy to have more time to focus on Orange to Apple and see it grow, but it wouldn’t be enough on its own. My two favorite aspects of blogging come down to writing and social media. Living in New York, there are countless opportunities to pursue and companies to work with.
Over the summer, originally posted here, I had the incredible opportunity of getting my feet wet in the world of marketing. I instantly fell in love! It’s fast paced, always changing, and requires a creative mindset. As I write this, I realize how surprisingly similar it is to teaching, minus the roomful of high-energy students. I really enjoyed using skills from the classroom and blogging to try something new.
So, what’s next for me? Right now, it’s a little up in the air. I have some freelance writing opportunities lined up that will hopefully open new doorways in the future. This weekend, I will be taking my very first, official “blogging” trip to Newport, RI on behalf of AAA. It’s going to be a blast and I have a whole batch of content planned for the trip. Afterwards, I’ll be sharing fall fashion when I get back to the city. I’ve also been spending a good chunk of my day looking into new job opportunities and companies I would want to work for.
In the meantime, I so love having the room to explore my city. I’ve lived here for just over a year, but never felt I was able to take advantage of it. On a typical day, I like to get up and pick a new place to grab a cup of coffee. Maybe I’ll take a long walk in a neighborhood I’m unfamiliar with, taking pictures all along the way. There’s so much inspiration in the city and now I get to soak it all in.
While I’m on this career journey, please continue to support my blog and social media, particularly Instagram. When I go into interviews for social media positions, it’s the first thing they ask me about. I’m so appreciative of you, my readers, for your following, but also for David, my husband who has been with me every step of the way during this process. If any new opportunities arise, you will be one of the first to know.
Love from NYC,
Katie
