NYC Halloween: Mrs. Maisel
Coat || Dress (also) || Heels || Handbag || Pillbox Hat || Earrings || Watch || Bracelet
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has taken the country by storm and I’m just along for the ride. This is one of my favorite shows right now, and I’m so excited for Season 3, coming out December 6th. The wardrobe alone is enough to make you fall in love. Living in New York, I think I have a deeper appreciation for the show than I would if I was still in Florida. Watching the show and actually being able to recognize locations is so fun! Since she is the most current NYC character, I couldn’t help, but recreate one of her most iconic looks for my final Halloween costume. I’m saving the best for last!
Must Have: Ladylike Coat
Truly, the color of the coat doesn’t matter. When it comes to emulating late 50’s style, it’s the silhouette that you need to look at. This ladylike day coat from J. Crew is absolute perfect! The knee length and belted design looks like it’s straight out of the yesteryears. A bubblegum pink color is not one I normally gravitate towards, but was exactly what a Mrs. Maisel costume needed.
Must Have: Contrasting Midi-Dress
Whatever color you choose for your coat, it’s important to pick a contrasting color that still compliments. For a bright pink, that means a deep maroon would do the trick. Keeping on trend with the 50’s, a midi-length dress would be the best pick. So many dresses from Julia Engel’s Gal Meets Glam collection, especially this one, fall under that category. They are feminine, modest, and chic. I have a feeling Midge Maisel would love all of them.
Must Have: Matching Pill-Box Hat
Pillbox hats were all the rage in the 50’s and 60’s, but also one of Midge’s favorite accessories. While you may not have one in your closet, Amazon is your friend! I snagged this pillbox hat, that perfectly matched my dress for around $15. If you order today, you’ll have it in time for this weekend’s Halloween party. They come in all kinds of styles and a rainbow of colors. A part of me really hopes they come back in style!
Must Have: Neutral Color Heels
As tempting as it is, don’t overthink the shoes. Whatever neutral color, pointed-toe heel you have in your wardrobe will be perfect for the job. These taupe pumps from Sarah Flint are versatile and so comfortable. Since I’m recreating my favorite NYC female characters, it’s only fitting that I rock a New York created company. For $45 off of your next pair of Sarah Flint shoes, use the code KATIE45.
Must Have: Classic Handbag
Now, the real Mrs. Maisel would have her handbag perfectly match the rest of her accessories. To be honest, I’m nowhere near being on that level. In the meantime, this handbag from Neely and Chloe is equal parts ladylike and functional. It’s a great choice for running around Manhattan. I consider it Mrs. Maisel approved!
Optional: Matching Hand Gloves
In the show, Midge rounds out a pink and burgundy ensemble with matching (of course) leather gloves. Much like the pillbox hats, wearing gloves when you’re out on the town was extremely popular in the 50s and early 60s. The only gloves I have in my close are for the winter, but this pair from Amazon is the right color. For under $25, they’re even tech friendly.
If you haven’t yet, you absolute must start watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. It has everything I look for in a TV show. It’s funny, great characters, and a touch of drama. Be sure to binge seasons 1 and 2 before December 6th to be all caught up for season 3. With such an amazing wardrobe selection, there’s stye inspiration in almost every scene. Which is your favorite?
Love from NYC,
Katie
