Day Trip to Cold Spring

Even without a car, taking a day trip away from New York City is the easiest thing. Last weekend, David and I were feeling a little restless. More importantly, we didn’t want to miss out on the fall foliage. We could have opted to stay and see the colors in Central Park, but a quick day trip away seemed like a great idea. Cold Spring was our destination.
How To Get There:
- By Train: It all starts at Grand Central Station. Taking the Metro-North Railroad, towards Poughkeepsie, you’ll be dropped off right by downtown Cold Spring in just over an hour. Since we’re in the Upper East Side, we grabbed the train at the 125th Station, but the route is still the same. When it comes to the weekend, spending $30 to see a new town is a bargain!
- By Water: During the fall, there is also an option to take the ferry. For $80 roundtrip, you can enjoy a relaxing cruise along the Hudson River. Try to keep in mind when the fall colors are at their peak and you’ll have the best view in the house.
Where to Eat:
- Hudson Hil’s Cafe: This was our breakfast stop while in town and really felt like the place to be. There was a line out the door of hungry New Yorkers ready for a good meal. The food was simple, but cooked to perfection. I loved my Fig and Prosciutto eggs. It’s a combination I can’t wait to recreate at home.
- Cold Spring Cheese Shop: Cheese boards have become my love language. Nothing seems better after exploring on a fall day than sharing cheese and charcuterie with a glass fo wine.
- Le Bouchon: Who would think to expect a French bistro in a small New York village? Their menu took me right back to Paris. Painted in a beautiful set of primary colors, this restaurant is hard to miss on the Main Street.
Where to Sip:
- The Pantry: I can never visit a new town or city and not go to a local coffee shop. The Pantry had some delicious brews, but also shared their space with Cold Spring Apothecary. The candles and lotions would make for a nice little souvenir of your day trip.
- Barber and Brew: David was such a huge fan of this concept. Stop by to get your haircut and enjoy a local (Hudson River Valley) craft beer along the way. When we peaked inside, we say a full tap room in the back of the barber shop. Such a good idea!
What to Do:
- Wander along the Hudson River: Even though this town has so much charm, the Hudson River is the star of the show. I loved grabbing our coffee and simply relaxing on a park bench by the river.
- Shop Local: Cold Spring was just full of boutiques that blew me away. There’s a little something for everyone. David instantly gravitated towards Old Soul. They sell outdoorsy gear and smelled like a campfire. That is pretty much David in a nut shell. I loved the General Store and I promise, it’s not quite as it sounds. They sell a collection of local groceries and home goods so you can bring Cold Spring home with you.
- Go for a Hike: Most of the people on our train ride up were definitely on their way to hike. Breakneck Ridge is just north of town and is scheduled to be about a 3 hour hike. Either take a cab from downtown Cold Spring, or stay on the Metro North for one more stop. The outdoorsy folks will find the best views of the Hudson River.
What to Wear:
When we landed in Cold Spring, it was the perfect fall day! The sun was out, but there’s a crisp chill to the air. We were only 45 miles north of the city, but it seemed like a world away with good fresh air. To stay cozy and warm, I opted to wear this cute plaid swing jacket from Draper James. Since it’s a pretty casual town, jeans and comfy shoes will be your friend.
Even though our trip only lasted a few hours, it was just the escape that I needed. Cold Spring is the most darling little town that deserves to be explored. If you are a New Yorker looking for a day trip, Cold Spring should be your destination.
Love from NYC,
Katie
