An Antelope Printed Dress

You may have heard of leopard print or tiger print, but there’s a new animal print on the scene. It’s called antelope and I think it may be the next biggest craze, and you can quote me on that. This shirt dress from Tuckernuck originally caught my eye because I love a good neutral print. Remember when Jenna Lyons said, “As far as I’m concerned, leopard is a neutral.” Well, it’s kind of like that. The tan and white color combination seamlessly goes with everything, but I particularly love how it pairs with black accent pieces.

What really sent me over the edge with this dress is when I saw Charleston blogger, Venita Aspen, style it. She is one of my favorite follows and every time she pops up on my feed, it’s such a delight. She’s so open, authentic, and has impeccable style. She accessorized with neutral and rose gold pieces, which complete changes the look of the dress. You can take a look for yourself, here. It’s also worth noting that we have very different body types, leading me to believe that it’s flattering on all.

If you’re loving the style of the dress, but not quite feeling the print, have no fear! This particular number, lovingly called the Royal Shirt Dress comes in several different colors. Even the antelope print comes in a blue color scheme and is equally as chic and versatile. The newest addition is the pink and tan gingham that will help this Florida girl seamlessly transition into the fall season.

Some Nautical Inspiration

Maybe it’s because I grew up on the water, but I am constantly finding inspiration from nautical influences. Especially in the summertime, the look is out in full force with breezy outfits and pops of navy. Whether it’s maritime prints, sailboat details, or anchor motifs, I’m all on board. Since I’m always in the mood for more nautical, here’s a quick roundup of some the preppiest pieces.

Map Print Shirt Dress

As soon as I laid eyes on this dress, I knew it had to be mine! The shirtdress style alone is enough to make my heart swoon. The fact that it’s in this gorgeous Long Island nautical print only makes me love it anymore. Already coming with a very fetching rattan belt, it’s the perfect little number to throw on and go. If you need something much more casual, the print also comes in a retro bikini top and bottom.

Nautical Screen Printed Sweatshirt

Time and time again J. Crew is my number one source for nautical motifs. They seem seem to be on a constant rotation at their stores, no matter the season. This printed sweatshirt is brand new and hot of the press. In a fresh and pristine white, it’s going to make your post sail tan glow, especially with white chino shorts. I don’t know where ‘Bellport’ is, but it would be amazing to find out.

‘Apres Sail’ Open Sweater

Even on the hottest days, it can sometimes get a little chilly out on the water. It’s a good idea to have a sweater on hand, just in case. Could this pick from Talbots been more perfect? At first glance, it looks like a standard navy sweater, but leaves makes quite a statement on your way out.

Nautical Square Scarf

On particularly windy days, out on the water, I highly recommend throwing on a scarf to keep yourself looking chic. After all, if it’s good enough for Jackie O, then it’s good enough for me. The head scarf is a timeless look that I have a sneaking suspicion will be making a very major comeback in the years to come.

Seaworthy Platform Sneakers

Did everyone own a pair of Sperry’s in high school or was it just me? These particular sneakers are an undated version on an old favorite. Still, they have the non-slip soles that you can trust. Wear them at the boat club or around town, they’ll go with everything you could possibly throw together.

I think I know myself pretty well. That being said, I always keep an eye out for fun nautical pieces. Even though summer is beginning to wind down, I say dress like you’re on your way to a yacht club with some nautical inspiration, even if it’s just to the grocery store!

Summer Reading

Back when I was a kid, I was the most insatiable book worm. Trips to the local library were at least a weekly thing and I would read anything I could get my hands on. Sadly, that petered out when I was in middle school because all of my free time was dedicated to swim team, something I was really excelling at. Since we’ve been able to spend so much time at home, I’ve been making reading more of a priority again and try to make time right before I go to bed. It’s a great way to decompress from social media, work, and current events. Because I’m always a learner, I tend to go for non-fiction books on topics that I’ve found interesting, but not always. Here’s a quick recap on some of my summer reading.

The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

This is a re-read. I distinctly remember reading this for the first time when I was in 8th grade, when my English teacher taught a unit on American literature. Regardless of how you feel about him, Ernest Hemingway is an iconic US author and one heck of a writer. I’ve had the pleasure of reading a lot of his novels, but this one always stands out. It’s fairly short, only 130 pages, and is an escape to a quiet fishing village in 1950s Cuba. If you want to dabble in American classics, this a great place to start. After all, it awarded him the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Bubble in the Sun by Christopher Knowlton

A book on young Florida during the 1920s? Color me sold! I thought this book was absolutely fascinating and tells the little known story of the Florida land boom. In hindsight, it actually serves as a cautionary tale about how developing the state way too quickly helped bring on the Great Depression. Even those it all takes place 100 years ago, it is eerily current and relevant. All of your favorite Atlantic and Gulf cities make an appearance in a never before seen light.

Currently Reading: Aesthetic Intelligence by Pauline Brown

One of my favorite bloggers, Julia Berolzheimer, listed this as a top book choice. Obviously, I had to read it for myself. Pauline Brown, the former chairman of Louis Vuitton North America, shares her years of industry insight on aesthetic. The result is richer and more meaningful experiences for your viewer, helping to build your brand. While I’m not very far yet, it’s a must-read for any creative or business owner. I only wished I knew about this book sooner!

Up Next: The Gulf by Jack E. Davis

While aimlessly flipping through my back issues of Coastal Living, I came across this book recommendations from their travel editor, Tracey Minkin. I had an opportunity to meet her in person and she is such a wealth of knowledge on the travel industry. I’ve lived on the Gulf Coast my entire life, but honestly don’t know that much about it’s history. This book is a whopper, at 500 plus pages it’s going to take me a while to get through, but I look forward to brushing up on the place I get to call home.

I joke that my eyes are bigger than the time I have in any given day. As soon as I see a book I find interesting, I compulsively buy it, worrying that I’ll never find it again. The result is an ever-growing stack of books about yay high, but there’s always room for more. Keep reading and I hope to share another list of summer reading soon.
