Spring Break Like a Local
Dress (also) || Wedges || Clutch || Earrings || Bracelet
March is the beginning of Spring Break season all across the country. While most Floridians welcome the tourists with open arms, sometimes it get a little frustrating. People on vacation tend to be at their own pace. That’s all fine, but remember that a lot of us actually live here. We still have to go to work, go grocery shopping, and want to enjoy where we live too. I know it sounds like I’m about to get on a soap box, but I’m going to share with some insider secrets. Vacationing like a local is the best thing you can do for yourself when on Spring Break! There’s no strict recipe for success. Here’s some tips to keep in mind before you go off and visit somewhere sunny.
Scope Out the Favorite Local Restaurants
As good of a time they may seem, touristy spots on the beach aren’t going to be the best choice when on vacation. They’re crowded, over priced, and oftentimes the food is extremely lackluster. Sometimes, they are worth the hype, but I suggest making a reservation with caution. Do your research and find restaurants that may have won local awards or nominations. It could be a little off the beaten path, but that’s where some of the best meals are found. Another good idea is to ask the concierge at your hotel. Let them know exactly what you’re looking for.
Learn and Practice Beach Etiquette
Tourists think it’s hilarious to feed the seagulls at the beach and it’s one of my to pet peeves. It causes an absolute feeding frenzy and probably isn’t great for the bird’s health. Whether you’re going to a park or beach, keep etiquette in mind. Don’t play music (especially profane) too loudly, pick up your trash, and watch where you’re stepping. I won’t call you out on it, but I’m sure there are plenty of locals who would!
Dress to Blend In
One of the first signs of spotting a tourist is taking a look at what they’re wearing. A lot of people tend to go overboard when they pack for vacation. I’m not saying to completely change your personal style, but at least check the weather reports. Packing nothing but a swim suit and coverup doesn’t give you a lot of variety, especially if you want to explore away from the beach. If all else fails, check the weather reports! Even though Florida is the Sunshine State, we still have our fair share of cold fronts and cloud coverage. A simple sweater can go a long way.
Of Course, Travel Safely
Local Floridians call tell you, the roads get crazy in the Spring months. We call it tourist season or snowbird season, but it means the same thing. There’s a lot of people on the roads who have zero clue where they are going. Drive confidently, and pay attention to where you’re going. Absolutely zero texting or searching while driving. In fact, it’s fully illegal in the state of Florida. Remember, Uber exists for a reason and it can give you so much peace of mind when trying to get around while on Spring Break.
The last rule of thumb for vacationing is enjoy yourself! You’re in a new place and I’m sure the weather will be beautiful. Make the most of it! If you’re traveling to Gulf Coast Florida for vacation, be sure to reach out! I have some great local recommendations that will help you Spring Break like a local.
