First and foremost, welcome back to my blog! It’s been about a long month hiatus, but as you can see, there’s been a lot of changes around here. The most obvious is the title change…
My hometown state of Florida is a citrus haven. Growing up, I had a near constant supply of fresh oranges and grapefruit from the trees in our backyard. If you haven’t started your day with fresh-squeezed OJ, I cannot recommend it enough. I have to admit, though, I was definietly spoiled and became very particular about what store brands of juice I would drink. As a kid, I would often turn my noise to a glass of juice if it didn’t meet my high standards. Can you really blame my parents for calling me an orange juice snob? I think the better term would have been an orange juice brat!
I have loved every moment of growing up and living in Florida and never really though about moving anywhere else. Even when David and I talked about how someday we could move to Boston or Denver for his work, I didn’t think it would ever happen. We love our life here in St. Pete. We have a great group of friends, are close to my family, and live the Florida life with beach days in the winter and smothering humidity in the summer. It was a little bit of a balancing act, but we found our place.
Skip to this past February when the only thing we thought was on the horizon was our wedding and honeymoon in Italy, along with some smaller things along the way. One afternoon David comes home with this silly little grin on his face and one big question:
What do you think of moving to New York City?
At first, I was so confused. New York was a place that was never really on the table and somewhere I just hadn’t seen my self living in. What would a little Florida girl like me do in the big city? After a lot of explanation, laughing, and just a few tears from the thought of leaving my home, I learned that David had more or less been offered a job of a lifetime that he (we) just couldn’t say no to.
What started next was months of meetings, travel, and planning for both David and I. I had two trips in one week to NYC where I flew up and back in less than 24 hours to tackle job interviews. Some people do that every week, but I was majorly impressed with myself because 1) I had never been to the city before, 2) I didn’t get lost once, and 3) I was completely alone. Despite having rocked all three of my interviews, I did give myself a few moments to cry just because of the sheer stress of it all. Just don’t tell anyone.
We won’t officially be moving until the middle of August, but now that we’ve signed for our new (large dog) friendly apartment, it finally feels like it’s really happening. It’s going to be an amazing adventure for our little family and is the perfect opportunity for a fresh start. This brings me back to…
the blog title change! Since I’m leaving my corner of the Gulf Coast, The Coastal Stylist isn’t appropriate anymore. I wanted to have a name that references my Florida roots and new life in the Big Apple. On Orange to Apple, you’ll still see my take on classic, timeless style and travel guides from my favorite places. The change of latitude is going to call for more cold-weather looks than I ever thought possible, but I’m up for the challenge. Instead of talking up my hometown, I’m going to keep you posted on the latest and greatest spots in New York that I may stumble upon. I want to answer the questions, “Where did I go? What did I do? What did I wear?”
I’ve heard New York called, ‘a city with inspiration at every corner.’ I’m so excited to tap into that inspiration and create a blog with content that is exactly what you need!
Love from Florida (for now),
Katie
