Bring NOLA With You

I’m a huge believer in bringing home a little moment when traveling to a new and fun city. Even though I’ve been to New Orleans countless times, I always manage to slip a souvenir in my carry-on. Whatever that thing may be, I want it to be meaningful and hopefully functional. In the past, I’ve shared similar posts about Italy and France. Here’s a list on how you can bring NOLA with you on your next visit.
Cafe du Monde Coffee
Coffee is part of this city’s fabric. There are coffee shops scattered all along the major neighborhoods, but a handful have a special twist on the average brew. At Cafe du Monde and others, their coffee is mixed with chicory to give a very distinct (almost chocolatey) taste. Historically, it helped cut the price of coffee during the Civil War, when rations were harder to come by. The flavor has lasted the test of time and can now be an easy to pack piece of New Orleans. Some grocery stores even carry it, especially in the South.
Local Artwork from the French Quarter
It’s hard to walk anywhere in New Orleans without seeing local artwork for sale, either on the sidewalk or in galleries. It’s a city for creatives. You’ll also find aesthetic to match whatever your personal preference is. On the most recent trip, my brought home this beautifully colorful print of St. Louis Cathedral. I had an opportunity to talk with the artist in the process. She was born and raised in the French Quarter, so sees the historic neighborhood in a extremely unique perspective.
Customized Street Tiles
I’ve said to keep your head up when walking in New Orleans, but also take a look down. Instead of traditional signs, streets are marked with beautiful blue and while tiles. Sadly, some rowdy tourists think it’s a good idea to take them right from the street. Instead, you can order a set that is all your own from the Preservation Tile Company. I ordered my parents a sign for their 30th wedding anniversary and it was so deeply appreciated.
A Little Something For Your Bar Cart
The origins of so many classic cocktails can find their roots in New Orleans. When we visited the new Sazerac House, I learned so much about that history. One name that you see everywhere at local bars in Peychauds. It is a botanical bitter that was created by a Creole apothecary in 1830. A few dashes of this bright red liquid can add a whole new flavor to an otherwise basic cocktail. I even love adding it to my lemonade to mix things up.
New Orleans Music
Music is as synonymous to the city of New Orleans as the food and cocktails you’re served. If you travel to New Orleans without seeing a live show, then you probably did something wrong. When I come home from trips to NOLA, I try and keep that vacation feeling alive by filling my home with homegrown music. Since I’m an old-soul, that typically means a lot of Louis Armstrong, but there are a lot of modern alternatives. For me, that means both Trombone Shorty, Tab Benoit, or Soul Rebels. I’ve seen them both in person several times and they are always a good time!
‘Go’ Cups from Your Favorite Spots
One of the added perks of New Orleans, apart from everything else, is the ability to take your cocktails to go. That way you can walk and talk with drink in hand, not having to miss out on music or events. While the standard for partiers would be a Hurricane from Pat O’Briens or Hand Grenade Daquiris from Bourbon Street, I have a different approach. Some of the best restaurants in the city have separate cocktail lounges. You can order world-class food, but still have the laid-back bar setting. When you leave, grab a go (or geaux as the locals spell) cup to take the show on the road. The Hermes Bar and The Roost Bar have great cups to bring home with you.
Fleur de Lis Anything
The Fleur de Lis is the official symbol of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana. Trust me, you see it everywhere. It stems back to the French Monarchy, which makes so much sense when you think about the history of the city. Whether you pick a small ornament or large work of art, your home can benefit from adding a small flour de lis detail.
NOLA Inspired Tees
New Orleanians have so much city pride! To support that mindset, local t-shirt shops have popped up selling love that you can wear. Even though I’m not from the city, I have to be extremely diligent in not bringing home too many tees because my closet just doesn’t have the room. My favorite boutique to shop is Fleurty Girl. Despite the name, there are options for both men and women. Ranging from cocktails to neighborhoods to Saints, these super soft tees are a wearable reminder of your time in the Crescent City.
New Orleans has been described as a city that also lives in you. I couldn’t agree more! By bringing home a special souvenir, you’ll be able to les bon temps roule (let the good times roll) no matter where you are!
Love from New Orleans,
Katie
