Sweater || Shirt || Vest || Pants || Heels
Let me start by telling you, I loathe layering! My ideal outfit of choice consists of a sundress and sandals, the lighter the better! Now that I’m a Northerner (never thought I would call myself that) I need to change that thinking or risk freezing to death this winter. So, I turned to the classic preppy look of a sweater and button down to make my first attempt at layering. I think the main issue I have is that I hate feeling bulky. When I wear more than one layer and look in the mirror, I just feel like I look so much bigger than I know I actually am. I have been told by many sources that everyone feels this way, but it still takes some getting used to.
I fell in love with this sweater from LL Bean the moment I laid eyes on it! We all know how partial I am to navy, but the green fair isle design just puts me over the edge. Not to mention, this sweater is incredibly thick and warm, perfect for those cold fall and winter days. Underneath, I layered up with a closet staple, my navy gingham button down from Old Navy. This is about as much print mixing as I can muster, but I think it 100% works, don’t you? It’s all in the same color family. If two layers still aren’t enough, I decided to add my navy vest from J. Crew Factory for good measure. The three pieces worked together to keep me plenty warm, but I could always shed if things warmed up.
No fall or winter outfit is really complete without a pair of corduroy pants. This pair from J. Crew is the only pair you should be adding to your wardrobe this season! Of course, I love the navy color, but there are still 5 more options to choose from. I think the forest green will be the next pair on my shopping list. Not to mention they are amazingly comfy. It’s been a hot second since I’ve worn skinny bottoms, but I love how I can tuck these pants into a pair of riding boots for a classic and equestrian look.
I have to say, I may have gotten over my fear of layering. I think the trick is not picking an outer piece that is going to swallow you up. By wearing slimmer options, we won’t have to worry about all of the extra bulk. What are your tips for layering? I’m going to need all of the help I can get.
Love from NYC,
