Where has the time gone? About a year ago, David and I decided to sell our house, pack everything we owned, and move to Connecticut. It seemed like such a rash decision at the time and out of context. Connecticut? Why? Most people leave the Northeast for the Sunshine State, not the other way around. Let me tell you, I can easily say that it was one of the best decisions we have made together. Despite all the hype Florida, St. Pete in particular, was receiving, it was beginning to feel a little monotonous. Add the brutally hot summers, stressful hurricane seasons, and the fact that we both work remotely, we felt it was time to leave. If you’re considering making your way to the Constitution State, here are six reasons you won’t be disappointed.
Coastal Living
It should really come as no surprise that this Florida girl loves being near the water. No matter where we live, a quick escape to the coast is always a priority. When we chose our Coastal Connecticut home, the proximity to the water was a huge bonus. We’re just a fifteen minute walk from the local beach, waterfront dining, and the Long Island Sound.
Gorgeous Small Towns
New England is known for its idyllic small towns. Over the past year, we’ve found such joy in exploring the region. Each town has its own character and sense of charm, along with countless small businesses that we love to support. Seriously, is there anything better than a fresh latte and pastry from the local coffee shop?
Quick Escapes to NYC
If you’ve been keeping tags on my Instagram and blog over the past year, then you’ve probably noticed way too many trips to Manhattan to count. From our apartment, we’re a quick walk to the train station that gets us to Grand Central Station in just about an hour. That has meant endless adventures and so many excuses to have dinner with friends. I’m not quite sure if our proximity to NYC was the number one reason for moving to Connecticut, but it was a top contender.
The Rest of New England
Not to be outdone, it’s so incredible that we have the rest of New England at our fingertips. We can be at the farther corners of the region, like David’s family in Vermont, in under five hours. Newport, an absolute favorite of our little family, is just a two-hour drive away. On some weekends, it feels like the toughest decision we have to make is deciding where we want to go!
The Freshest Seafoods
Okay, so we obviously had some fresh seafood in Florida, but there are some regional New England dishes that I just can’t get enough of. For me, no meal is better than a bowl of good clam chowder with a side of French fries. My mouth is watering just thinking about it, and I actually had it for lunch earlier this week. During the warmer months, tiny seafood shacks that dot the coast open up for fresh lobster rolls, clam strips, and fried oysters. It’s the truest sign that summer has officially arrived.
Beautifully Diverse Seasons
While I will always be partial to the summer season and love hot weather, I’ve become increasingly fond of winter. With Connecticut, you can truly appreciate all seasons in their full glory. The fall foliage is a marvel in its own right, especially with apple picking and cider, but then gives way to a festive holiday season in winter. As we speak, we’re entering early spring, meaning the cherry blossoms aren’t far behind. Each season in New England has its own style that you can’t help but appreciate.
Have we found our forever home? It’s really hard to say. I know I’m nomadic by nature and will never dismiss an opportunity for adventure. In the meantime, we are incredibly content in Connecticut and look forward to many more years of exploring our little slice of New England.
Love from Connecticut,
Katie
