We just returned from our second trip to Colorado. Each time we visit, I always like to dedicate one day to explore the surrounding towns, away from Downtown Denver. It helps you appreciate the best that the great outdoors has to offer. Last time (over three years ago), we had the opportunity to spend one full day in the iconic Boulder. Like any Colorado itinerary, we hiked, had good food, and sipped even better local beer. Although our schedule in Golden was much different, it was still an incredibly memorable day.
Fuel Up for the Day
Even if you’re only thinking of tackling a moderate hike or trail, be sure to start the day with a full meal. Because of the increased elevation, you will be exerting more energy and need to plan accordingly. A great place to start is Windy Saddle Cafe for a dose of caffeine and filling avocado toast of breakfast wrap. Afterward, you can celebrate a good workout with lunch at Buffalo Rose. It’s one of the most popular restaurant destinations in town and for a good reason! The space originally opened in 1859 as a salon and has truly been a part of the town ever since.
Take A Hike!
Because Golden is at the edge of Rocky Mountain foothills, you can expect several trail options. Because we were still acclimating, we didn’t push ourselves too much. Starting by walking away from town on the Clear Creek Trail, we sort of followed along until we were ready to turn back. The river views were so relaxing. I even dipped my toes in. Let me tell you. It was chilly! This particular route had mostly switchbacks (think zig-zags up the mountain). We may have accidentally wandered off the official designated path, but the views were incredible. Sometimes it pays to take the road less traveled.
Have a Coors Straight from the Source
Golden is home to a little-known brewery called Coors. Maybe you’ve heard of it? Although we weren’t able to visit the plant, I can say that the facility is massive. Because of that, you’re going to see a lot of Coors pride throughout the town. If you stop for lunch, order a glass. It’s probably going to be the freshest batch of Coors you’ve ever tasted! For a newer and smaller brewery in town, stop by New Terrain Brewery. It has become an instant favorite throughout the state of Colorado.
Colorado is so much beyond a weekend in Denver. To really experience the Centennial State, be sure to visit as many smaller towns and get outside. I promise you, the fresh Rocky Mountain air will do you wonders!
Love from Denver,
