Supporting Pride Month
Shirt ($15 of each sale goes to the Born This Way Foundation) || Jeans || Wedges || Handbag || Earrings || Bracelet
Growing up, I used to think the best thing about my June 25th birthday was that my half birthday was Christmas. Now as an adult, I’m beyond honored to share that time with Pride celebrations around the country. Florida’s largest is actually held right here in St. Pete. Since the beginning of June, the city has been positively glowing with rainbow flags and so much support. Sadly, festivities and celebrations have been cancelled this year, but it’s still possible to spread the love!
Shop For A Cause
One of the easiest ways to show your support is to shop for the cause. Especially during the month of June, so many companies have made a point to support LGTBQ+ charities. Nordstrom released Be Proud by BP. 10% of sales will support True Colors United to serve homeless LGTBQ youth. Ralph Lauren is donating 25% of purchases from the gender-neutral Pride Collection to the Stonewall Community Foundation. Banana Republic is giving $60,000 to the UN Free and Equal Campaign for LGTBI equality. I’m personally loving this rainbow striped shirt from Saint James. $15 from each sale will be donated to Lady Gaga’s Born this Way Foundation.
Show Your Support
Wearing rainbow stripes is such a simple gesture that makes a huge statement! Regardless of your orientation, it’s something that everyone can do. On the home front, feel free to hang a rainbow flag. They are all over the Downtown St. Pete scene and can be seen waving proudly from homes in all of the different neighborhoods. It can mean so much to so many people.
Show Others Love and Acceptance
The most important aspect of Pride month is to practice what you preach. Show others love and acceptance, no matter how different they may be from you. Take the time to educate yourself by reading books based on the LGTBQ+ point of view. This list from Penguin Random House is extremely comprehensive and is updated often. It’s also a topic that can and should be shared with kids. Parents, this is a great list of children’s books that introduces LGTBQ characters. Love and acceptance starts at a young age.
Happy Pride Month! Even if the celebrations aren’t for you, still show your support. It will help make the world a better place.
Love from Florida,
Katie
