One Year in NYC

One year in New York! Holy cow, I cannot believe I’m writing that! If you would have told me two years ago that I would be living in the Big Apple, I probably would have laughed. You never know where life is going to take you, let alone where you’ll make a home. For those of you who are new to the blog. First off, welcome! Secondly, it’s important to know that I’m a Florida girl who transplanted to NYC to follow an amazing career opportunity for her husband. The move was the inspiration behind the new blog name, originally being called The Coastal Stylist.
Anyways, August marks the anniversary of the Kennedy’s moving to NYC. Currently, we’re nestled in the Upper East Side, a stone’s throw from the MET Museum and Central Park. Although we love our little corner of Manhattan, we find so much joy in exploring the other neighborhoods. Our current favorites, besides our own, are Greenwich Village and Chelsea. Sometimes the number of options to explore is overwhelming, but we make it our mission to try something new every weekend.
Since moving here, one of the biggest transformations I’ve noticed within myself is how I dress. Florida style is all about bright colors and bold prints. You will definitely still see that around New York, and on me, but neutrals are normally the name of the game. Inspiration is absolutely everywhere. I find myself taking more fashion risks and feeling less afraid of statement pieces. I also love the notion of wearing bolder looks just to run my errands around town.
A year in NYC has also made me more patient with people. You may have heard that New Yorkers are all rude and brash. That is simply not true. I’ve met some amazingly nice people who were born and raised here. However, you will have to deal with people really focused on their own day and not in-tune with what’s happening around them. Seeing shoving because they are in a hurry or moving at a snail’s pace because they are buried in their phone are daily occurrences. I’ve been blessed with a lot of patience and it definitely has been tested here on multiple occasions.
You also see a lot of kindness here. People who choose to live in NYC are a pretty resilient group, but most are willing to help a fellow New Yorker in need. I believe that tiny acts of kindness, no matter how small, keep this city running. I try and facilitate that mindset in any way I can. It helps me feel like I’m more apart of the city and not just a long-term tourist.
How long will I be staying in New York? Only time will tell. David and I talk daily about how much we love St. Pete and how it will always be home. In the meantime, I can’t wait to take full advantage of living in the capital of the world. During this next year in NYC, I hope to visit more museums, try more restaurants, and meet more interesting people. Cheers to a marvelous year!
Love from NYC,
Katie
